Description
This handcrafted replica is inspired by 16th‑century basket‑hilt rapiers, often referred to as Walloon swords or Haudegen. Designed as a decorative display piece, it reflects the ornate hilt construction and elegant blade geometry associated with Renaissance‑era European swords.
These swords were widely used across Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia during the Thirty Years’ War and Baroque period. Their pierced, cage‑style hilts also connect them to the Pappenheimer tradition, favored by both military officers and civilian gentry.
The brass basket hilt is fully handcrafted, featuring intricate curves and protective bars. The high‑carbon steel blade is forged and shaped in classic rapier style, while the wooden grip is wrapped in wire for a refined finish. The included leather scabbard is fitted with brass accents to match the hilt, completing the presentation. This replica is intended for display and collection purposes.

The sword is beautifully made. I think best held with a gloved hand. The blade is so long it is hard to carry on a waist belt holder vertically since it goes all the way to the ground. I think it best for ceremonial use like making those pointy arch formations at weddings. The blade is just so long which would make such an arch tall but for regular carry the length makes it an awkward sword. It is very fine in every way. If there is a sword of this type I would like better I have not found it yet.
